The Swachh Vidyalaya initiative launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development motivates schools to adopt best practices in sanitation and hygiene. Schools winning an award under this initiative get an additional talking point to influence parents to get their ward admitted in the school. The purpose of the awards is to honour schools that have taken steps towards fulfilling the mandate of the Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign.
Over 1,300 Kolhapur schools have enthusiastically participated in the initiative by furnishing details on the set parameters to the district primary education officer.
Subhash Chougule, the district primary education officer said these responses were to the invitation sent to schools in July and were based on parameters such as cleanliness, availability of hygienic facilities, maintenance facility and potential for further development, availability of water at school, toilet facilities for students along with actual photographs of facilities available on the premises.
The schools are going to be adjudged on parameters and will be categorised as 'excellent', 'best', 'good but can be improved' and 'needs urgent improvement'.
The officer said that the initial response saw almost 1,600 Zilla Parishad School excited to participate in the initiative. However certain schools backed out and a finally responses were received from 1,375 schools.
Chougule was visibly happy while sharing that as many as 35 schools were placed in the ‘excellent’ category as they were found to be complying with all 5 parameters. These names of these schools have been forwarded to the state government for the next round of the Swachh Vidyalaya initiative.
The schools selected at the state level will proceed for contention at the national level by October 7 while the overall winner of the Swachh Vidyalaya initiative will be announced on November 25.
