After receiving an overwhelming response to the pilot online training sessions rolled out in the 3rd week of April by the Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE), the board has taken an imperative call. It is set to roll out a free-of-cost teaching programme to improve learning outcomes in changing education times.

In the wake of COVID-19, the pilot course was held over 500 free-online training sessions, which were participated by over 35,000 teachers and principals from across the country and abroad. This indicated the need for teachers to learn how to catch up with the changing scenario of virtual education. Along with the students, the sudden entire shift to online has been difficult for teachers as well. And, keeping this mind CBSE wants to now provide them teaching methods to improve learning outcomes through its teaching programme.

On the successful completion of this free-of-cost course, teachers will also receive an e-certificate. In an official announcement, CBSE stated, "It is clear that this pandemic has utterly disrupted an education system that many assert was already losing its relevance. Enhancing professional development digitally is a need in the times of Covid-19, where social distancing and remote interactions are the new normal."

The objectives of the CBSE online teacher training programmes as outlined in the official notification are:

1. Enable teachers to teach better and lead improved learning outcomes.

2. Continuously instil new knowledge and skills as per the demand so as to keep them at par with what is expected.

3. Help teachers revise and refresh the knowledge that has already been provided to them in their regular training and makes it more crisp and practical.

The online programmes will be carried out by the expertise of CBSE Centre of Excellences (CoE). "Each Online Training session will be for a one-hour duration; there will be no participation fee; e-certificate shall be issued to the participants; attending five sessions may be considered as one day of training as per Affiliation Bye-Law," said the official CBSE notification.

The official notification mentions that online teacher training classes will comprise several sessions, each being an hour-long, with 1200 online sessions planned alone for the month of May. Attending and learning from 5 sessions will be counted as a single day of the teacher training class.
