The government maybe throwing the bathwater away but is surely caring for the baby as can be seen from the case of government run Senior Secondary School in Gumla, Jharkhand.

The school gained notoriety this year in February when 32 students including 3 girls were expelled when they were caught cheating. These students did not belong to the school but had come to give their exam here as it was serving as an intermediate exam centre.

The district school education and literacy department decided to "save" the school by converting the school to a ‘Model’ school and give it an educational overhaul.

The roadmap to converting the Gumla School to a ‘Model’ school is already in place. What will be additionally helpful is that the district education officer (DEO) is working out of the school premises itself.

On the instructional side, qualified and experienced government and private school teachers will be appointed to give lessons in school. "We have started recruiting qualified teachers. We have also decided to enlist a few block officers, who have graduated from top Delhi universities, as tutors," said Gumla DEO Jayant Mishra.

The school will be modelled on the lines of private schools in terms of infrastructure and facilities and even the prescribed pupil-teacher ratio. The educational environment and the curriculum will be inspired from private school set-ups. The revised lesson plan, internal examination schedule and students' home assignments will be assessed on a weekly basis by a specially formed steering committee.

Regular performance reviews will be held for both the teachers and the students and the reports of these reviews will be up for discussion at the steering committee's monthly meetings, shared Mishra.
