Headmasters of government schools have clearly spelled out the reason for not being able to do justice to their academic duties – an overload of administrative work.
Head masters from high and higher secondary schools met on Sunday as a part of the executive committee of their association. They stressed on implementing the new education policy after making appropriate changes.
To make matters worse, the state government is set to roll out 14 free beneficial schemes for government school children which will again fall under the supervision of head masters.
"While the HMs are made to discharge the functions of revenue officials by ensuring caste, income and nativity certificates to the children, the Aadhar card is a recent addition," rued HMs who attended the meeting.
Sensitisation programmes against dengue, distribution of iron tablets and sanitary napkins to girl children, which are ideally the functions of the health department, are also being added to the duties of HMs.
These are in addition to their work ensuring registration of students, who have passed board examinations, in employment offices.
Repeated complaints by head masters across the state about not being able to monitor teachers in classes due to the administrative burden prompted state president of the Tamil Nadu high and higher secondary school head masters association Samy Sathyamoorthy to suggest appointment of special staff members by the state government to relieve HMs from additional functions.
