In an unfortunate accident, a 5-year-old boy sustained severe head injuries when a ceiling fan fell on him at a school on Thursday. The regrettable incident took place in the afternoon when Navraksh Verma, a kindergarten student, was attending a class at the Progressive Education School. The ceiling fan of the classroom suddenly fell on his head and he sustained injuries.
The school authorities immediately rushed the child to a local hospital and in the meanwhile called his father Krishna Verma. According to Verma, no medical attention was given to his son till the time he arrived at the hospital.
Verma also claimed that upon inquiring about the injuries, the school administration refused to divulge any details. "One of the school staff misbehaved and manhandled me," he alleged.
The school's founder Col Anil Kak (Retd) and director Arjun Kak later issued a statement which said, "This was an incident which has shocked and saddened all of us. In the time since inception, an incident of this nature has never occurred, so we can only classify this as a freak accident which has resulted in a child getting hurt."
They further said, "We will extend all assistance and courtesies to the child and the parent. We have also decided to, with immediate effect, remove all the ceiling fans and begin to replace them with wall fans."
Col Kak later clarified that the ceiling fan did not fall directly on the child but a blade of the falling fan hit the child's scalp and caused the grievous injury.
Denying that the school stuff had any scuffle with the parents he said, "The child's parents and relatives were obviously agitated. Our staff understood the situation and acted with compassion."
Meanwhile, Verma took Navraksh to Unique Hospital, where doctors conducted a CT scan and gave 10 stitches to seal the wound. “Navraksh is still vomiting and the doctors have kept him under observation," Verma said.
He added that he was contemplating on lodging a police complaint against the school, but his child’s health and recovery was primary for him. "There is no way that I will send my son to this school again," he said.
