In an attempt to encourage more children to pick up reading as a habit and to enhance reading skills among the students of primary classes in government schools, the education department's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the "Pade Bharat Bade Bharat" campaign with the Room to Read India Trust on Monday.
The program aims to increase the linguistic skills like reading, writing and use of library in schools among children. Another objective of the program is to ensure proper implementation of girl child education projects in the state.
The project has been designed to nurture students into independent readers by inculcating fluent reading skills and healthy reading habits along with creating an environment conducive for reading in schools.
The project will initially cover all 505 government primary schools of Champawat district, making it the first district in the state where 100% of the schools would be covered under the project of Room to Read.
Room to Read has been active in Uttarakhand from some time now and it has already helped in setting up libraries in 835 schools of Bageshwar, Nainital, Tehri, Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Dehradun districts besides contributing to the improving literacy rate in the state.
