MP school principal plays pied piper with plays, brings back dropout kids

The principal of Government middle school – Mahalaxmi in MP has hit upon a novel way to create awareness about importance of education and attending school. He stages street plays with his students and has managed to encourage dropouts to renter the schooling system.

The government and the education department have been known to undertake various initiatives from time to time to reduce the dropout rates in schools. It may be in the form of incentives to parents, students, subsidisation and other measures.

However, the principal of government middle school, mahalaxmi, shajapur in Madhya Pradesh (MP), is doing something unique to highlight the problem of school dropouts and to herd them back into school.

Manohar Lal Rai and his students are organizing street plays to convey to dropout children and their parents the importance of going to school and the significance of education.

Rai, who initially staged his street plays with only 15 of his students, now conducts such plays in other parts of the district. The results of his efforts are there for everyone to see. There has been a marked increase in the number of students in government and private schools in the district.

Through his plays, Rai wishes to explain the parents of dropout children how education can eradicate poverty and inequality thereby ultimately benefiting them.
