In context of the news items which appeared on 17th-18th April 2019, in various newspapers alleging “dropping” of few chapters from Social Studies class X syllabus, and in context of the “expert” comments printed, it is hereby clarified that no chapters have been deleted from the syllabus of Social Science Class X by the Board. All the chapters will be studied by the class X students in due course of time and also evaluated.

The decision of the board to make few chapters as part of internal assessment is based on sound rationale in view of the feedback from stake holders and recommendations of the Committee of Courses of Social Science.

The Board had been receiving numerous requests from its stakeholders to rationalize the curriculum of Social Science as students were forced to study huge syllabus of four
different disciplines viz History, Geography, Political Science and Economics.

The Committee of Courses of Social Science recommended assessing these chapters under the new system of strengthened school-based assessment in consonance with the overall spirit of the board’s circular of 6th March 2019 which focuses on how CBSE intends to strengthen its evaluation process including the school based/internal assessment, in order to augment the skill set being acquired by the students.

The mentioned chapters namely, Democracy and Diversity, Popular Struggle and Movements and Challenges to Democracy can best be understood through project work and experiential learning and similarly best assessed through different modes in addition to pen paper tests, in any of the following forms or combination of different forms for
periodic tests:
 Quiz, Debate, Role Play, Dramatics, Group Discussion, Brainstorming sessions, Visual Expression, Interactive Bulletin Boards, Gallery Walks, Exit Cards, Concept Maps, etc.

These combinations are understood to provide more conceptual clarity and understanding besides creating interest in students. As such these chapters have either been covered in detail in class IX or can be better understood if taught and assessed through innovative and experiential learning method. Besides these merits, the decision
also helps to alleviate the inordinate stress on the students.

In order to ensure implementation of this circular in letter and spirit by the schools, the marks scored by the student in Internal Assessment will get reflected in the score of Final Examination. The Board will also check the records of internal assessment done by the schools.
