While it is common knowledge that education is free upto class VIII for all girl students. It is a lesser known fact that a lot of girls drop out of the education system at this point. In a laudable move, the district administration of Gurgaon is planning to provide continued free education to girl students from class IX through class XII. This move will be an extension of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme which is already in force.

According to a research, the education department is planning to raise around Rs 1.35 crore for this supplementary education scheme. These funds will be raised through various corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Various stakeholders including several NGOs, volunteers and teachers have committed their support to the cause.

The district education officer, Manoj Kaushik has said that work on the scheme has already started.

While it is a sign of a very responsible and mature government to plug a leak when it is evident, the situation begs a question. Can the parents of these girls really not afford to educate them after class VIII? If that is not the case then there is a serious mindset issue that needs to be addressed. Are these parents implying that it’s ok to send our girls to school since its free else money spent on them is not worth it? And if money is really the point then this scheme is just what the doctor prescribed.
