A kid’s mind has no limits, it flies … and then with technological advent, with the world shrinking, a child’s mind these days easily explores foreign lands too. Their inquisitive mind makes them explore… dream. India is a dream country for many.

Making the dream of knowing India come true for students of Wellington School, Scotland was St. Edmund’s School, Jawarnagar. St Edmund’s  Jawar Nagar hosted a cultural exchange program for the students of Scotland where the students got to know India, Rajasthan precisely, better.

Partnering with St. Edmund’s School is Wellington School, Scotland via the British Council, under which the host school had invited the guests for a stay and visit. As many as 10 students from Wellington School, with Simon Johnson, the Principal, have been visiting the school and Jaipur for  the past few days.

Principal Ma’am, Dr. Pooja Singh, welcomed the guest teachers and students, who were then escorted to the school auditorium where they were welcomed again, in that charming Rajasthani style, by the school students. Anchors of the program greeted the guests with the Sanskrit verse “Atithi Devo Bhava”, and then the program continued with the melodious Rajasthani song sung by the students accompanied by the traditional music played by the students on flute, tabla, dhol and Veena.

After the Rajasthani song, it was time to entertain the students with some dance and the next dance performance surely was something they had never seen before, something that left them awestruck … something they won’t forget in the years to come … Rajasthani Chari dance. The students of Scotland were amazed to see the performance with one student holding three earthen pots on her head and dancing on the song ‘Chirmi Mhari Chirmi’. The moment the girl performed the stunt of picking up a handkerchief off the ground, with three pots still on her head, the students from Wellington gasped, astonished by the stunt.

After the dance performance, the students of Wellington took a trip of entire Rajasthan through a PPT that threw light on the historical monuments, rich heritage and culture of the state. The PPT giving an insight into the real Rajasthan also talked about the festivals, dresses, food of Rajasthan.

St. Edmund’s School left no stone unturned in letting the guest students have a complete feel of the our country and so the next dance performance was also turned a surprise for them. This dance was on the song ‘Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat’ from the 1959 movie Navrang. The girl performed as was done in the movie, blending the two roles of male and female into one, dressing as a female from the front while carrying a male get-up from the back.

Playing the perfect host, St. Edmund’s School now presented the gifts, token of gratitude to the Wellington School’s headmaster, Simon Johnson and the students.

Principal Sir, Mr. Johnson appreciated the efforts of the host school, encouraging students for more such interactions. He said that such collaborations are great way to have an insight of different cultures around the world. Also that he and his students were in total awe of hospitality of the Pink City.
